Shade City 2023: Bigger, Better, Greener
We are excited to invite you back to Shade City Brewfest at the Idaho Botanical Garden! This groovy ’70s-inspired, sustainability-driven, beer-filled jamboree was dreamed up by a group of people with two priorities in mind: drinking delicious beer and creating a space to share local, sustainable business practices and ideas. Join us Friday, April 21 from 5-9 pm & Saturday, April 22 from 1-6 pm.
Created by Lost Grove Brewing, Idaho Botanical Garden, and Treasure Valley Canopy Network, Shade City Brewfest has a mission to explore the ways that the brewing community and businesses around Idaho can reduce their impact on the environment while still holding fun events and enjoying local food and drinks. This year, we are adding an after-party at the Old Pen! Join us after the 'fest on Saturday from 6p-10p where there will be live music, a light show, and more beer and food available.

We are keeping things groovy in honor of the first Earth Day which took place on April 22, 1970. Break out your bell bottoms and big sunglasses - 70s outfits are highly encouraged!

what to bring
-
Your own cup! We know you have a steel pint glass, cup from other beer fests, or even an old coffee mug you can grab. We don’t care what kind of cup (except please no glass) – just bring one!
-
A water bottle! It’s important to stay hydrated. We will have water stations around the ‘fest so you can refill. Please bring your water bottle empty and fill it at the water station when you arrive.
-
A ‘70s outfit! We are keeping things groovy in honor of the first Earth Day which took place on April 22, 1970. Dress up in your finest ‘70s attire and get ready to get funky.
-
An alternative transportation plan! Ride your bike, walk, run, scooter, or ride a bus to Shade City and raise a glass to reducing your carbon footprint.
-
Respect for The Garden! Please do not walk in any garden beds or plant areas in the Garden. There are sleeping plants that we don't want to trample. Stay on the paths.

What not to bring
-
A chair. We will have seating available or you can find a nice grassy spot to rest. There is limited space in the Garden, so plan on sharing some elbow room with your neighbors!
-
Children or dogs: We love your kiddos and your pups, but this particular party is for humans over 21 years old (this applies to infants as well). Only service animals are allowed.
-
A cooler or outside food or drinks: We are going to have tons of beverages for you to enjoy! Beer, cider, NA beverages, and a variety of food will be available for purchase, so no need to bring any with you.
-
Weapons of any kind: There are no weapons permitted in the Idaho Botanical Garden. Leave them at home!

Sustainability
A Brewfest with a green heart
Our goal is to employ zero and low-waste tactics at every turn for Shade City. Here are some of the ways we are reducing waste:

-
Patrons will bring their own cups! We are not having cups made for this event. There will be used/donated cups available to purchase should someone forget a cup.
-
Food vendors will use reusable flatware and plates
-
There will be a dishwashing station for cleaning plates for reuse managed by our friends at Roots Zero Waste Market
-
Brigade Screenprinting will be on site to print your Shade City merch as you order it to eliminate excess merchandise
-
Promotional event posters will be printed on the back of old posters or on recycled paper
-
We will provide as many alternative transportation options as we can including bus routes, bike parking, and more
New in 2023!
-
Composting food waste with help from Timber Creek Recycling
-
Partnering with Climate Hound to calculate the fest's carbon footprint and purchasing carbon credits that will offset emissions from 2022 and each year moving forward
-
Staffing trash stations with volunteers to ensure trash, recycling, and compost are sorted correctly
-
Partnering with Lime electric bikes and scooters to provide discounted rides and increased access to Lime vehicles

Get into the Groove
Music

During Shade City, we'll be grooving to funk, soul, and other 70s tunes.

Back by popular demand, The Magnificent DJ Xclusive will be spinning vinyl all day Saturday. Get ready to boogie while you sip your samples.

Old Pen After Party
Live music, light show, & more delicious beer
This year, we are adding an after-party at the Old Penitentiary, just next door to the Idaho Botanical Garden. Join us after the fest on Saturday, April 22 from 6 pm - 10 pm. There will be live music from Héctor, Floating Witch's Head, and The Shivas along with a light show from Mad Alchemy (did you catch them at the Sonic Temple at Treefort last year?!).
Plus there will be more beer and food available to purchase at The Old Pen so you can keep the party going!
This is going to be one groovy party you won't want to miss. Tickets are available to purchase individually or as an add-on to your Shade City pass.
