Many of you fondly remember the corner of 13th and Eastman as the home of Sun Ray Café, or even Lucky 13. For Jake Black, owner of Lost Grove Brewing, this corner holds a special place in his heart—a reminder of community, growth, and opportunity.
A North End native and Boise High graduate, Jake grew up witnessing the changes in his neighborhood and city. His journey started as a counter person at Lucky 13, where he developed a love for the restaurant industry and a knack for bringing people together. Even then, he was full of ideas about how to create better spaces for dining, socializing, and connecting.
In Jake’s home, there’s still a photo of Lucky 13—a memento from his early days. Over the years, the meaning of that photo has evolved, now symbolizing not only his roots but the vision he’s brought to life in the same neighborhood.
In 2017, Jake opened the original Lost Grove Brewing. His goal wasn’t just to run a successful business, but to build something meaningful: a company that values its employees, cares for the environment, and contributes to the community. Becoming a certified B Corp was a key part of that mission, ensuring fair wages and sustainable practices.
When the Hyde Park location became available, Jake saw it as a chance to give back to the neighborhood that shaped him. With hard work and the support of his team, Lost Grove Brewing’s second location opened in the summer of 2023. Jake brought the same principles of fairness, inclusion, and sustainability to this new space, making it a welcoming spot for everyone.
Now, with plans underway to expand seating and enhance the gathering space, Lost Grove remains dedicated to what matters most: fostering community, supporting the people of Boise, and bringing everyone together with meaningful partnerships, delicious food, and exceptional beer.
